Cities, island and entire countries around the world are powered by 100% renewable energy. Each community uses it’s own blend of solar, wind, hydro and other renewables depending on its location. In the USA there are currently 5 cities running on 100% renewable energy: Burlington, VT, Aspen, CO, Greensburg, KS, Kodiak Island, AK, Palo Alto, CA. 27 cities in the US have committed to becoming 100% renewable including Atlanta, GA, San Diego, CA, Salt Lake City, UT and Chicago, IL.
Internationally, at least 5 entire countries are now using 100% renewable power: Costa Rica, Iceland, Norway, Paraguay, and Uruguay. As has South Island, New Zealand, the Isles of Eigg and Orknay in Scotland, Tau, American Samoa, Lower Austria, Samsø, Denmark and Quebec, Canada.
So why is Asheville not 100% renewable?
- Because the city of Asheville and Buncombe County are not allowed, under the current structure of law, to decide what type of energy to use. They, by law, must do what the state tell them. This is a result of our Democracy Problem.
- The NC state legislators are heavy influenced and funded by Duke Energy who of course want to maintain their legalized monopoly so they can keep making over $2 billion a year in profits.
